This updated version is almost the same as the old one, but it has a higher max resolution (4,800 dpi, or dots per inch, compared to 2,400) and an even faster scan rate (eight seconds for a document, four seconds for a photo, compared to the Lide 300’s ten and five seconds, respectively). Readers have bought the older version of this scanner, the CanoScan Lide 300, 463 times since 2019, making it our eighth-most-sold scanner. Unlike our best-rated pick, the CanoScan is a flatbed scanner, which means you can open the lid, place documents or photos right on the glass, and scan multiple pieces at once. Scanner type: Single-side | Scan speed: 8 ppm | Size: 9.9” x 14.4” x 1.7” | Image transfer: USB-C file transfer (PDF, JPEG, png, TIFF), cloud storage (Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox) And because it’s so small, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg to buy, making it a high-quality starter scanner for almost anyone. If you need to scan to multiple destinations, you can use Brother’s free desktop app to select multiple. Many reviewers say it’s easy to set up (less than 15 minutes, according to one reviewer) and connect with both PCs and Macs (Brother’s scanners are also the only ones we recommend that support Linux ). Its size makes it especially convenient, as you can bring and use it pretty much anywhere, and the included USB 3.0 cable lets you charge it from your laptop if there’s no outlet nearby. Even though it’s less than a foot in length and weighs about 1.5 pounds, it works quickly and accurately - it can scan at speeds up to 16 ppm. With nearly 2,700 five-star reviews on Amazon, this scanner is equally well-liked by Strategist shoppers, who have purchased this scanner nearly 2,981 times since 2019, making it our most-sold scanner. This scanner is small, but it doesn’t sacrifice quality. Scanner type: Single-side | Scan speed: 16 ppm | Size: 11” x 2” x 1.4” | Image transfer: USB 3.0 file transfer (PDF), cloud storage (Brother’s cloud service, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox) We also spoke with Robert Kern, a photo-scanner specialist at B&H, and included a model below that can handle large volumes of photos. To find the best scanners for your needs and budget, we looked at the models that can get the job done as well as tested document-scanning apps that offer many of the same capabilities as a standard scanner. Some are flatbed scanners, others have automatic feeds. Others are foot-long devices you can store on your desk for quick scans when the need arises. Some are huge machines made to scan up to 4,000 pages a day. But not every scanner is right for every task. Whether you’re working from home, helping your in-laws archive their family photos, or just trying to turn your stack of receipts and bills into zero-footprint digital files, a document scanner is a great way to save and share files quickly. For example earlier versions of Chrome had a Flash plugin that could be turned off depending on user preference, whereas now Flash must be enabled in Chrome specifically in order to run at all. Many older web browsers still have the Flash Player available either as an option, or built-in and bundled with the browser. Most modern web browser will not have Flash Player installed by default anymore, or are deprecating the plugin due to performance or other reasons. It is not recommended to install Flash in Safari on Mac. A few months later somehow we were able to conceive again on our own, sustain the pregnancy and almost a year later give birth to our daughter Abigail. So much has happened since I wrote that post. ***Here is where you left off before you stopped to read my old post.*** Please go and read the post that I am reflecting on today (and comment if you choose), if you haven’t already, and then come back here to see what I have to say about my journey since then. Here is the link to my post called: Who You’d Be Today He was a very good sport about spending some of his special day walking to remember his baby sister Molly and the other babies that we have lost over the years. We did so earlier this month, for the fourth time, on October 2, which was also Sean’s 8th Birthday. The “Walk to Remember” that I talk about in this post we have participated in every year since. The Remembrance Day this year falls on this coming Saturday (October 15). I did not have this post (or the song lyrics that I shared in it) in mind when I thought of this topic. I find it a welcome coincidence that I happened to choose this topic/writing prompt to explore the same week three years later. I wrote the post that I chose for this week on Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day in October 2008. Why did you pick this post? What was it about the particular song and/or lyrics that moved you to include them in your blog entry? Is this a song you still listen to during happy or difficult times in your life? What memories does the song call to mind for you? Has your perspective changed since the day you wrote your original post? If so, how? Do you think you would still feel the same way now if you were writing it today? Would you still include this song? What have you learned about yourself, your family and your life since you wrote your original post? However, for those who might have needed some help and inspiration to get started, I shared some questions to consider: Participants can write about whatever you want in your new blog entries. When we find ourselves facing challenges and uncertainty in our life we often turn to music and lyrics to find comfort, peace and inspiration. During happy moments and milestones we celebrate good times by listening to, singing along with and dancing to our favorite songs. For this Time Warp theme/prompt I talked about how music plays a significant role in so many of our lives. Then write a new post on your blog about why you chose it and what has happened in your life since. In my post last week I encouraged participants to choose a post from your archives in which you included song lyrics. The theme for this week’s Time Warp Tuesday is: Song Lyrics The gist of Time Warp Tuesday is to revisit and share some of our favorite blog entries from our archives and reflect on our journeys since we wrote them. If you are here to participate and link up your post, you can do so with the Linky Tools at the end of this post (or if you have any difficulty using it, you can share the link to your post in the comment section here). In case you missed my original post about this, here is the background of how and why I came up with the idea. © Copyright 2023 Destination NSW.Welcome to the third installment of my new blog hop/writing exercise called Time Warp Tuesday here on Four of a Kind! is the official tourism site for Destination NSW. Well-insulated houses that have been carefully air-sealed have low heating loads. If the slab were warmed to the point where it felt like your favorite pair of fleece slippers the room would be overheated. If the thermostat is set for 70°, let’s say, the floor temperature will be 75° or so-a lot cooler than the bottom of an unshod foot. In a well insulated house, this is probably not going to happen.Įven on a very cold day the floor will be only a few degrees warmer than the room. Homeowners who think a radiant-floor system will guarantee warm feet all winter long may be in for a surprise. Warmboard makes a structural subfloor panel that incorporates a reflective layer. Joist bays may also get a reflective barrier and a layer of insulation to direct heat upward. Staple-up systems sometimes include aluminum transfer plates that help warm the floor more efficiently. One thing to keep in mind is that when tubing embedded in concrete springs a leak, repairs will be difficult, messy, and expensive. Tubing also can be placed in thin slabs that are installed over wood framing (Radiantec calls these “suspended slab” systems). Radiantec, a company that specializes in radiant heating systems, says a concrete slab installation is the simplest and most efficient option, as long as it is done correctly. Even in the dead of a New England winter, circulating water might be only about 80☏.Ĭoncrete floors have a lot of mass, so they are slower to warm up and slower to cool down than a wood floor. The water circulating in the tubing is usually at a lower temperature than water that would supply baseboard or wall-mounted radiators. Loops of the tubing are connected to manifolds which are, in turn, fed by a supply line from a boiler or a water heater. Tubing is made from a very tough plastic called PEX, short for cross-linked polyethylene. Alternately, tubing can be placed in special kind of grooved underlayment before it is capped with the finish flooring. Tubing can be placed in the walls or ceiling ( Messana is a company that offers this type of system), but radiant floor heating systems are usually built around tubing that’s either stapled to the under side of the floor sheathing (staple-up systems) or embedded in a layer of concrete or gypcrete. (Much of the technical information cited in this article comes from previously published work by Holladay, Alex Wilson and others, which is referenced in the text or in the “Related Articles” list at the bottom of the page.) Tubing is typically in the floor Martin Holladay, the former editor at Green Building Advisor, even objects to the term “radiant-floor,” preferring instead the longer but more accurate phrase “in-floor hydronic tubing.”īut let’s start with a look at how these systems are put together, consider the electric radiant alternative, and then turn to the question of whether the same network of tubing that delivers heat in the winter also can cool the living space in summer. Some designers don’t see a place for radiant-floor heating systems in well-insulated, tightly built homes. In short, opinions on these systems are divided. Research Bolsters Hopes for Radiant Cooling Adding Air Conditioning to Radiant-Floor Heat When files are deleted, your operating system sends them to the Recycle Bin before they’re permanently deleted. To give yourself the best chance at recovering your files, it’s highly recommended that you stop using your computer for the moment, unless necessary for troubleshooting. Let’s take a look at a few ways you can recover unsaved or deleted Illustrator files. Luckily, there are a few ways you can go about recovering those files you so desperately need so you don’t need to start all over again. No matter how it was lost, you’re left wondering how you can get those files back. This problem can worsen tenfold when that file contains all of the work you’ve been preparing for a client. Electronically archived books last forever and can be easily accessed for a variety of purposes. Digitization may also be necessary to comply with the regulatory guidelines of your industry. Digitizing books is essential in order to protect critical information from natural deterioration and for disaster recovery. The big plus of this option is that the data is off your premises, and therefore not susceptible to local disasters. Online backup services securely send your data over the internet and save it on remote file servers in encrypted form. Usually, you'll need to run a pre-boot environment from startup media to restore a system image, since doing so from within your main OS isn't possible.Īs mentioned, you can make local backups or online backups, sometimes called cloud backups. But that extra protection comes at the price of more complexity in setting up and restoring. Some products can even update a disk image nearly continuously. A disk image contains every bit of data on the drive and offers stronger protection, since it enables you to recreate the whole system after a hard drive failure. With incremental, you need the latest full backup and all the intermediary backup data to restore a file to its original state, whereas with differential, you just need the last set of differential backup data and the first full one.Ī step further than the simple copying of files is copying the entire hard drive, including system files, as what's called a disk image. Incremental backup saves system resources by only backing up changes in files from the last incremental backup, and differential backup saves all changes from the last full backup. The first should be obvious-all the data you've selected for backup is copied in its entirety. More granular options include whether backups are full, incremental, or differential. Usually, you also have the option to tell the backup service to monitor your drive for changed or new files as they occur. Most backup software lets you schedule scans of your hard drive for new and changed files daily, weekly, monthly, or continually (or at least, say, every 15 minutes). Should you lose the files, either through disaster or simply by deleting them or overwriting them, you can just restore them from the saved copies.įor this to work, the copies of your files must be updated regularly. That storage can be another drive, an external drive, a NAS, a rewritable disc, or "the cloud," meaning someone else's servers. The concept behind backup software is pretty simple: Make a copy of your files on storage separate from your main hard drive. These are all well worth running, but they have some limitations, lacking some of the extra benefits you get from running standalone backup software. Both also offer some cloud backup, with iCloud and OneDrive, as well. Windows 10 and Windows 11 include a File History feature and a full disk backup feature, and macOS includes its Time Machine software. Backup software and services do just that.īoth Windows and macOS have beefed up their built-in backup tools in recent years. Your business assets-documents, plans, financial spreadsheets-as well as your personal assets-family photos, videos, and music-deserve to be protected. Sometimes data loss happens for reasons beyond the technological, as in the case of theft or natural disasters. Hard drive failure is a common occurrence, and ransomware can make a computer's contents inaccessible. All technology, whether it's a brand-new iMac or a ten-year-old PC running Windows 7, can potentially take a sudden nosedive. If it can happen to a big corporation like Delta, don't think it can't happen to you. Several years ago Delta Airlines had to cancel more than 1,300 flights, at a cost of $100 million, not because of weather or mechanical problems, but because the company's computer systems went down. As a result, we now look at the best local backup software and online backup services in this one article.īuying Guide: The Best Backup Software and Services for 2023 Each method has its merits, but more and more frequently, backup companies give you both options. Online backup services encrypt your data for security and send it to the backup company's servers for off-site storage. The first makes a copy of your data that you store wherever you choose, such as on an external hard drive. In previous years, we differentiated between local backup software and online backup services. What would you do if your hard drive crashed, you accidentally deleted important files, or you lost your laptop? Or what if a fire or flood meant the end of your digital media and documents? Using a backup service is one of the best ways to protect yourself against these and other types of data loss. The folks at FileMaker have obviously thought carefully about ways to enhance the experience at many of the places where it really matters. Once you really get used to taking advantage of these structures – whether or not you think that they’re worth the minimum price of $197 which you’ll pay for the single-user upgrade – you’ll be glad to have them. FileMaker really does appear to have overcome all imaginable obstacles and this everything always works extremely well.Įach of the areas of functionality necessary to support such uses was tested during the course of evaluation for this review – and found to be as described, and wholly reliable: start data entry or modification of structure on one device and see it instantly reflected on those others which you have attached to the system. Switching between devices and platforms reliably needs really smooth and seamless synchronization of data and database design. Regular sales figures can be securely prepared and their presentation devised and built on a desktop machine and then quickly and easily displayed on an iPad in a hastily-convened meeting etc. Or, for instance, a sportswriter can report, view, fact-check, research, maintain records etc whether in the office or in the field. Pick your scenario: a real estate professional wanting to track and update multiple kinds of data… from locations, prices, offers, contacts, viewings and fully-illustrated property details regardless of where they are can do so using FileMaker Pro 15 with the utmost of ease. But there are relatively few actual innovations which would justify a minimum upgrade price of almost $200.Īlthough there are no major features, if you use FileMaker in such a way that you need to collect, edit and/or present a huge array of data types regardless of platform, then this release will also please. Indeed, it’s a delight to work with: the familiar speed, robustness, fluency, logical layout of menus, vast array of carefully-conceived features and the integration of all aspects of functionality regardless of device and platform are, of course, retained.įor the majority of users, FileMaker Pro 15 deservedly remains the de facto standard. MyMac was impressed with this consolidation and integration of services in June last year but wondered whether the high price asked was justified in view of the relatively small number of significant new features offered.įileMaker Pro 15 goes even further in terms of making the use and exchange of data more transparent regardless of device and working environment. Last May, Apple subsidiary, FileMaker, released version 14 of its market-leading multi-platform and cross-device application – now not so much a database as an app itself to create all manner of apps in their own right.ĭata, applications built for and using that data, as well as its retrieval, manipulation and presentation are all dealt with seamlessly across web, handhelds, tablets, desktops, mobile devices and all common operating systems. |
